n Architecture Inc. was commissioned to design a contemporary temple development on a prominent site in Brampton. The project envisions a thoughtfully planned spiritual and cultural destination that serves both religious functions and the broader community, creating a serene yet vibrant environment for worship, and gathering.

The site is designed to maintain a sense of arrival and tranquility. The temple building is positioned as the focal point of the development, with axial approaches and defined entry sequences that enhance the ceremonial experience. The design blends traditional temple elements with a contemporary expression. The built form emphasizes symmetry, vertical articulation, and a strong visual presence along Mayfield Road. Sculpted roof forms, refined facade detailing, and a harmonious material palette create a distinctive identity that reflects cultural significance.

The development is currently progressing through the Site Plan Approval stage.

n Architecture Inc. was commissioned to design the Peace House Retreat & Conference Centre, located at 918 Moonstone Road East in Oro Medonte, Ontario. The project is initiated by an organization dedicated to missions, outreach, and long-term engagement with the Indigenous and the First Nations communities across Canada. At its core, the Peace House Retreat & Conference Centre is envisioned as a place of welcome, healing, learning, and cultural exchange, with a particular focus on supporting the Indigenous children, youth, and young adults from surrounding reserves and communities throughout Ontario.

The vision for the Peace House Retreat & Conference Centre includes the creation of a serene, multi-purpose facility that accommodates retreats, conferences, and seasonal camping programs. Designed to operate year-round, the centre will host winter and summer programs that encourage personal growth, leadership development, cultural connection, and community building. Set within a natural and peaceful landscape, the facility is intended to provide a safe and inclusive environment where participants can gather, reflect, and build meaningful relationships.

The proposed development is situated on a 76.13-acre site and will include retreat spaces, administrative offices, chalets, meeting rooms, and workshop facilities. The building is organized using a radial layout that responds sensitively to the surrounding landscape while promoting clarity, accessibility, and a sense of unity. The central atrium forms the heart of the facility, with retreat rooms, chalets, meeting areas, and communal spaces radiating outward. This configuration enhances in-site circulation, allows for functional zoning, and maintains strong visual and social connections throughout the building.

The design emphasizes openness and connection to nature. Framed views, generous natural lighting, sloped rooflines, and horizontal planes reinforce the radial geometry while grounding the building within its natural context. The layout supports both communal gathering and individual reflection, aligning with the project’s purpose as a place of peace and renewal.

A Pre-Consultation Application for the Peace House Retreat & Conference Centre was submitted in December 2024, marking the first formal step toward realizing this vision. The facility will be designed with a strong emphasis on wellness, functionality, and environmental stewardship, ensuring alignment with regional planning policies, community values, and long-term sustainability goals.

Overall, the Peace House Retreat & Conference Centre represents a meaningful investment in inclusive community infrastructure. The project demonstrates a commitment to reconciliation, the Indigenous inclusion, and the creation of thoughtful spaces that foster healing, learning, and connection, contributing positively to the Indigenous communities, the First Nations people, and the broader Oro Medonte region.

From 1900s, Indian immigrants from the South Asia, Caribbean and other areas of the world, a lot of them Hindus, have been immigrating to Canada. And most of these immigrants settled down in GTA and the surrounding area, especially in Scarborough. The National Household Survey shows that during the 30 years from 1971 to 2011, the percentage of the Hindus in the Canadian population has grown up 30 times from 0.05% to 1.5%. 73.2% of the Hindus live in Ontario. In Scarborough, more than 15% of the population is Hindus, which is much higher than the other areas in Canada. In Rouge Park district where this Project is located, 18.6% of the population is Hindus. The establishment of Shiva-Shakti Cultural Centre is one of the highlights of the Canadian multi-cultural community.

In Hinduism, especially the major tradition – Shaktism, Shiva and Shakti are the two of the principal deities. Shiva - “the auspicious one” – is the Supreme Being who creates, protects and transforms the universe; and Shakti – “the goddess of energy and capability” – is the primordial cosmic energy and represents the dynamic forces moving through the entire universe. Thus, the name of the cultural centre clearly interprets its lofty status in this community.

A Shiva Linga, which is a stone sculpture with a high plate as the base and a pillar in the centre, is the worship object in Hinduism as the proof of the Lord Shiva and the evidence of the formless but Omnipotent Lord’s existence. Our architectural design concept is that the cultural centre itself, with a 2-storey building as the podium and a tower (Shikhar – summit) on the top of roof, is a Shiva Linga at a large scale.

The project is in an industrial zone and the shape of the property is very narrow. Also to respect the neighbours, the Site entrance had to be kept a distance from the east boundary. Rather than considering this is a handicap, we used this as an opportunity to undulate the building mass into a 45 degree setup. The enlarged site entrance allows for providing a welcoming feeling to the public; and the undulating architecture corner is like a piece of frozen music with a strong rhythm which makes the urban street view more interesting. The south elevation is a formal temple architecture facing the parking lot. The continuous decorative Indian arches are the beauty of this architectural style. The colour of the building simulates the Indian Red Sandstone, presenting the cultural origin and providing the auspicious atmosphere. All together, we have engaged to create an exquisite piece of architecture in the industrial and the residential zone.

The ground floor is a preparation lobby; transcending to the 2nd floor- where the main temple is situated.

Overall, n Architecture Inc. is trying to introduce beauty and spiritual aspects of Indian culture to the citizens of Toronto while creating a place of worship for the local Hindus.

Address: 8861 Sheppard Avenue East, Toronto, ON

The Total Building Floor Area: 830.3 sqm. (8937.25 sq.ft.)

The Shikar-Bandhi Temple designed to be built adjacent to Jain Cultural Centre will be the largest Jain Community Temple in North America, consisting of two main Halls one with the capacity of 250 and another with the capacity of 150 patrons. Divided by a folding partition, enables two main halls to be utilized at the same time when needed. The building was designed to have some inspiration from traditional Jain temples in India with the use of modern technology, materials, complying with all the building codes and industry standards in Canada.

We have designed 3 small and two bigger Gambhara, two Kesar Sukhad rooms. In main level designed a very vast area which will be used as an Art gallery or museum of Jain society in the future. The corridors will be equipped with display cases to present the handicrafts of society’s members.

Jainism is an ancient religion from India that teaches that the way to liberation and bliss is to live a life of harmlessness and renunciation. The aim of Jain life is to achieve liberation of the soul.
Toronto, Canada is home to the largest population of Jains in North America. Demographic indications show that the population is continuing to grow and the needs of the community are expanding to include the social and religious needs of society into perspective.

The followers of Jainism are called “Jains”, a word derived from the Sanskrit word Jina (victor) and connoting the path of victory in crossing over life’s stream of rebirths through an ethical and spiritual life.

The Jain Society of Toronto (JSOT) was established in 1974 by a group of Individuals with the aim of promoting cultural and community services to Jain individuals who have come into the country.

In 2012, 4.1 acres of land with unfinished structure of 48,000 sq.ft. was bought in the City of Toronto “441 Ellesmere Road”. It was dedicated to build the biggest Jain cultural Centre in North America and a Shikar-Bandhi Temple. A place of worship for Jain community of Greater Toronto Area.

A Shikar-Bandhi Temple, that will encompass both Swetambar and Digambar Ghabaras, this will serve as the ultimate legacy of unity, togetherness and worship for all Jains. A Jain temple, Derasar or Basadi is a place of worship for Jains, Jain temples are built with various architectural designs, but there are mainly two types of Jain temples:
1. Shikar-Bandhi Jain temple (one with a dome)
2. Ghar Jain temple (Jain house temple – one without a dome).

There is always a main deity, also known as Moolnayak, in every Jain temple placed inside a sanctum called “Gambhara” (Garbha Griha). A manastambha (column of honour) is a pillar that is often constructed in front of Jain temples.

As the end of the year approaches, we would like to present the current under construction projects from n Architecture Inc. 2018 was a very busy year for n Architecture Inc., with a total of 16 projects currently undergoing construction and/or renovations. These projects vary from temples, car wash, hotels and offices to industrial buildings and restaurants and are located in different provinces dealing with various number of construction companies. Each and every one of these projects requires a number of site visits and written reports to be sent until the construction is completed as per the approved drawings and compliant with the Ontario Building Code. While these projects are presently all at different stages of construction, for example, some are just starting while others are ready to be signed off; we are all excited to see the final results. Finally, as the new year approaches, we wish that 2019 will be filled with even more projects and construction activity…!
