Scope of work: Exterior & Interior design, Interior Fitment Building Permit

n Architecture Inc. a progressive architecture firm based in the GTA has worked on various Burger King throughout Canada, some of which are in Niagara region. A few of these restaurants are now complete and functional and can be found in Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Stoney Creek, and Hamilton.

6235 Lundy’s Lane, Niagara Falls, ON

This Burger King restaurant is a 3650 sq.ft. building with a drive through. n Architecture Inc. was commissioned for the interior and the exterior design renewal. The overall look of the existing Burger King restaurant was updated to the latest Burger King design standards. Because the existing restaurant closed for the construction, the timeline of the project was very tight. As well, the restaurant interior design was adapted to the COVID health and safety standards. n Architecture Inc. worked with trade contractors to deliver fast completion of the construction.

284 Glendale Avenue, St. Catharines, ON

Site Plan Approval & Shell building Architect: ACK Architects Studio Inc.

This Burger King restaurant is a 3110 sq.ft. building with a drive through. Being on an urban site with busy roads and a provincial highway nearby, n Architecture Inc. worked closely with the developers and the restaurant owner of this property to design the site efficiently to fit the drive through on this tight urban property. The interior of the building was designed as per the Burger King design standards and the exterior design of the building was selected among multiple iterations of the exterior facade done by the restaurant owners and the Burger King team in collaboration with ACK Architects Studio Inc., the architect of the shell building.

1356 South Service Road, Stoney Creek, ON

Site Plan Approval & Shell building Architect: Turner Fleischer Architects Inc.

This Burger King restaurant is a 3200 sq.ft. building with a drive through. Weekly meetings were held with the developers to ensure smooth process of the development. n Architecture designed the interior design of the restaurant. The exterior facade was designed in collaboration with the Burger King team, the restaurant owner, the city, and the developers. The drive through regulations by the Burger King and the city were also considered in the process of designing the exterior of the restaurant.

1200 Rymal Road East, Hamilton, ON

Site Plan Approval & Shell building Architect: 7D Associates Ltd.

This Burger King restaurant is a unique 2-storey high 3200 sq.ft. restaurant with a double stacked drive through. The shell building is a two storey building with a convenience store and a truck wash bay. n Architecture worked closely with the Burger King team, the developers and the trade contractors to come up with a creative solution to accommodate the Burger King design standards to the double height building while adhering to strict fire safety standards of the Ontario Building Code. As a result, this location features a very high Burger King blade sign along with internal connection with the convenience store next door.

All the projects have successfully underwent through the relevant approval process to obtain approval from all the concerned authorities having jurisdiction.

Located at the busy intersection of Main and Vodden Street, this new 2880 square feet standalone Tim Horton’s restaurant is set upon a site identified as a gateway to the historic Downtown and Central Area of the City of Brampton. It includes interior seating area, a drive thru that was strategically placed behind the restaurant to be screened by the building itself, and a beautiful Trellis patio area that increases the built form and can be enjoyed by the customers on warmer days.

Due to the importance of the site as the entrance to the city center, one of the key objectives was to break away from the typical Tim Horton’s prototype and specially design the exterior facades of the building to ensure the vision of giving this Tim Horton’s a timeless quality. Carefully placed at the corner of the intersection to border both streets, an increase in height and an intricate brick detailing of basket weave pattern intrigue the eye and gave the one-storey restaurant a prominent presence attracting both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, while the outdoor patio invites further human activities to the corner of Main and Vodden Street.

Furthermore, the unique building form incorporates a generous area of glazing on the main facades, providing transparency along the streets and allowing a great amount of natural light into the restaurant. The building elevation also cleverly incorporates the loading area to minimize its impact on the public realm while enhancing the restaurant’s frontage along Vodden Street.

Finally, red brick was chosen to harmonize the building with the surrounding architecture and its juxtaposition with Hardie Board in combination with the wood of the exterior patio remind both visitors and locals a cozy and welcoming feeling to the restaurant, which additionally reflects Tim Horton’s distinct values and trademark as a Canadian company.

Mahdieh (Madia) Ghassemi, who was a part of the team that won the award was one of the 176 people on board the Ukraine International Airlines plane that was shot down in Iran on January 8, 2020. Madia had been working at our firm since the last five years and she was one of the Most Senior Architects in our practice.

Born in Iran in 1981, Madia earned her master’s degree in 2004 from the Azad University of Tehran. After arriving in Canada, she secured her intern status in 2013 and passed the Architectural Exams (ExAC) in 2016. She became a licensed architect in Ontario the following year, and was an active participant in education programs and social activities.

She kept on taking on responsibilities, delivering and performing, so much so that by the time this accident happened she was managing a number of complex projects on her own. She went through a rigorous internship program to get her Architecture License. She was very driven, very committed, very bright—just a nice, warm individual.

We all miss her cheerful presence in our lives dearly and this building is a living testament of her contribution to the world of architecture.

As the end of the year approaches, we would like to present the current under construction projects from n Architecture Inc. 2018 was a very busy year for n Architecture Inc., with a total of 16 projects currently undergoing construction and/or renovations. These projects vary from temples, car wash, hotels and offices to industrial buildings and restaurants and are located in different provinces dealing with various number of construction companies. Each and every one of these projects requires a number of site visits and written reports to be sent until the construction is completed as per the approved drawings and compliant with the Ontario Building Code. While these projects are presently all at different stages of construction, for example, some are just starting while others are ready to be signed off; we are all excited to see the final results. Finally, as the new year approaches, we wish that 2019 will be filled with even more projects and construction activity…!
